Happy Holidays

Oh, it has been some time since my last post. Things are still crazy around here. While Dad is home, he's got me repainting his house. When I'm not doing that, I'm fixing things around my sisters' houses. Never a dull day.

While Christmas will be light this year, I'm still thankful for all my blessings; family, friends and good cheer. Whatever holiday you celebrate, or don't, may the New Year bring you all happiness, health and good fortune.

Merry Christmas
Happy Chanukah (day 6 right now)

In Limbo

Quick update on the goings on or lack thereof. Dad is doing better and back at home. We've been living with family while we take our old landlord to court. Things are just in a holding pattern for the time being.

Sometimes change is outside our control

It's mid July now. Several things have been happening. We found out about 4 months ago that our landlord wasn't paying the morgage on the house where we were living. Our lease was up at the end of June, but we had decided once we found out he was behind on the mortgage we weren't going to sign another lease with him. Not going to risk getting thrown out of the house because he got foreclosed.

We had plans to live at my dad's house and rent the property from him so that we could provide extra income for him, and it would not be touched if he went into a nursing home or assisted living facility. Two weeks until the end of June my dad tells us that he doesn't want anyone to live in his house if he can't live in his house. He wants us to move in with him, but that's just not going to happen. He needs professional care, not just the help of family. He's being stubborn as usual.

In the meantime, we rushed to find something, but found nothing, and I refuse to pay a non-refundable pet fee over $100 for our one declawed spayed cat. (She had to be declawed. Polydactyl with claws growing into her paw when I found her. Don't hate on me for her being declawed. It was the humane thing to do.) I just can't see being punished and losing money for a pet. One place had a $400 non-refundable fee. Seriously? We also saw some overpriced shabby places. I spent 10 years in Chicago. Those rent prices wouldn't fly even in Chicago. Yes, that is a 3 bedroom 2 bath home on paper, but putting paneling over a garage door and a shower stall no bigger than a sink with a toilet behind a room divider doesn't make it a real bedroom and bathroom. But someone will surely pay for it even though it's a rip off.

Anyway, I digress. We weren't able to find anything in time, so we put our stuff in storage. Thankfully, I'm from a large family and we are able to stay at my two older sisters' house in the meantime.

Also during all the chaos of packing and moving, the sister that my dad lives with had an emergency appendectomy. So I spent the week completely with my dad while she was in the hospital. I definitely know that there is no way I would move in with him at his house. No. Not going to happen. Once my sister came home from the hospital, I just stayed from morning to night to take care of them both. The last few weeks have really put me to the test. I'm spent. I'd like a vacation now, please. I know that's not going to happen any time soon though.

A lot of change has been happening in our part of the world, much of it beyond my control. Sometimes I have to let go and just flow with it. Just keep swimming.

The Father front

Well, Dad has worsened, then got better, and then evened out, but he has no intention of going to any assisted living or nursing home. So, in the meantime, he is living with my sister. I go over everyday to make sure he's fine. I'm there while my sister is at work. At the moment, I have no life other than taking care of him, but that's alright. I'd rather make sure he's comfortable and doing well.

Morel time

With the early arrival of spring, we headed out earlier than normal to hunt morels. We managed to find enough for a snack. At the moment we hunt on public land. Looking forward to a future that has our own woods in it so we can hunt and have more than a handful of morels.

When it rains, it pours

We've been taking steps to get things in order to get a mortgage, but wouldn't you know, Murphy has been around to screw things up for us lately. Between my car, my wife's car, taxes and pending surgery, I'm stretched pretty thin. If only my body reflected that, ha, badum ba, rimshot.

Anywho, on the Dad front, we will have to be making a decision fairly soon as to his future. My sister and I have been making daily treks to where he lives (with his gf) while my brother occasionally drives down to take him to a dr appointment. That being said, he doesn't always see Dad or how he interacts with his environment. My sister and I are the ones that really know what's going on.

This afternoon was not a good day for him. We are going to have to talk it over and see if a combination of home nurse care and my wife and I living in the basement at his house is feasible, or if assisted living is the way to go. It's a hard decision because Dad doesn't like to be idle at all. He's always got something that needs building or fixing or mending or mowing or what have you. He's not the computer or tv type either.

While assisted living offers him more companionship and attention than he is getting right now, it doesn't offer him the ability to tinker around with stuff in his garage. It's a rough decision, but one we are going to have to make soon. I just wanted to let the world know I'm still alive. I love spring and the new possibilities.

I suck

Even though I intended to make this blog a foray into my rural experience, it's become more of just a vehicle to making comments on blogs I follow. Anyone ever read my blog anyway?
